Hedonic Design: of, related to, or characterized by pleasurable design.
This group project was centered around hedonic design with a focus on camping gear. In order to bring more pleasure to camping without industrializing the entire experience and essentially making the process easier we chose to focus on bringing back the primitive independence campers regularly seek out. After research we decided to begin with the campfire by connecting the camper with this entrancing element.
Using new technologies and materials such as transparent aluminum, the center of our design project was to design a pot and stove that allows the user to watch the natural flames heat up their food or water. We also did a lot of research about maximizing the heat efficiency by using multiple chimneys that surround the pot allowing the stove to heat from numerous places, thus maximizing the heated surface area. The chimney feature is also what directed our form language across the entire CampLite brand by using the ribbon-ed chamfer as an underlying form theme.
We designed a second pot that has a handle, which uses thermoelectric technology to allow the user to plug in their flashlight and charge using the difference in temperature from the stove to the pot. This feature allows the flashlight to serve a dual purpose as a light source and a handle when cooking food and gets back to the primitive independence campers live for by giving the user the ability to power their own tools using natural resources.
Most of the challenge to this project was developing a brand. This forced the team to consider color schemes, form language, brand language and all of the details that an actual company would have to consider when designing multiple products or gear.
